Is it okay to install a fan on the wall? And what does Feng Shui say about it?

Penang Feng Shui Master Lee

Hello everyone, I’m Feng Shui Master Lee from Penang, Malaysia.

Today, let’s talk about a common question:

Is it okay to install a fan on the wall? And what does Feng Shui say about it?

In traditional Feng Shui, some people believe wall-mounted or ceiling fans aren’t ideal because the wind blowing directly at a person — especially over the head — might affect health, disturb energy flow, or even impact luck.

But here’s something important:

These beliefs mostly come from places like China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong — where winters are cold. In those climates, fans blowing for too long might cause discomfort or illness, which is why such views developed.

However, Malaysia and Singapore are hot all year round. The air is humid and often not well-ventilated, making it easy for damp energy to build up. From a Feng Shui point of view, this kind of “dampness” can affect health, emotions, and even stop good fortune from flowing.

Installing a fan high up on the wall actually helps improve air circulation and reduce humidity — which supports smooth energy flow, something we call “Sheng Qi” (vital energy).

Feng Shui is about guiding the flow of energy — not rigidly following old rules, but adapting to the environment.

What’s written in ancient texts needs to be interpreted with today’s context in mind — we shouldn’t blindly copy everything.

True Feng Shui is about solving real-life problems and improving quality of life — not creating unnecessary restrictions.

So in Malaysia or Singapore, it’s totally fine to install a fan on the wall — as long as it’s not blowing directly at your bed, desk, or head. In fact, it can actually help improve your energy flow.
