讲得好听一点,这是天真、善良与纯真;
The Ten Gods: Understanding Personality, Relationships and Life Through the Relationship Between “Me” and the World
Recently, I looked back at some of the BaZi books I wrote many years ago, and I had a rather interesting feeling:
“Revisiting the old allows us to discover something new.”
After many years of studying, practicing and gaining experience, my understanding of BaZi has changed and deepened considerably.
The same theory can reveal completely different layers of meaning when we look at it at different stages of life.
Things that I once thought I understood can take on a much deeper meaning after years of practical experience.
So today, I would like to reorganize and share the “Ten Gods” (十神) from the perspective of how I understand them now.
When I previously introduced BaZi, I mentioned that I would eventually talk about the Ten Gods.
The term “Ten Gods” has absolutely nothing to do with gods or spirits.
Simply put, the Ten Gods are a way of understanding the relationship between “Me” — represented by the Day Master — and the other Five Elements in a BaZi chart through the principles of generating and controlling.
Therefore, when analyzing a person’s personality, character and life experiences, we should not only look at what their Day Master is.
We should also look at which Ten Gods appear in the chart, where they appear, how strong they are, and how they interact with one another.
Today, let us begin with one of the most important and nurturing stars:
Direct Resource — 正印 (Zheng Yin).
⸻
Direct Resource — The Mother, Nurturing, Protection and Unconditional Support
Direct Resource, or Zheng Yin (正印), represents the Five Element that generates the Day Master.
For example, if your Day Master is Jia Wood (甲木), Water generates Wood. Therefore, Water is the Resource star for Jia Wood.
More specifically, Gui Water (癸水) represents Direct Resource for Jia Wood.
Why is Direct Resource traditionally associated with the mother?
Because in the Ten Gods system:
“That which generates me is Resource.”
And the mother is traditionally regarded as the person who gives us life, nurtures us, protects us and guides us.
Therefore, Direct Resource does not simply represent the mother.
It represents a much broader force of:
nurturing, protection, education, support, knowledge and nourishment.
A mother is like the sun and the earth.
The sun continues to shine and give warmth without becoming diminished by its giving.
The earth continues to carry and nourish all things. Even when people dig into it or make use of it, it continues to bear and support silently.
This reminds me of a principle from the I Ching:
“Thick virtue carries all things.”
This is why Direct Resource represents such a profound form of energy.
It gives a person the opportunity to be nurtured, protected, educated and supported, especially during the formative stages of life.
Therefore, when Direct Resource is prominent in a BaZi chart, a person may be more likely to receive support from parents, elders, teachers or benefactors.
Throughout life, they may also encounter people who are willing to teach, guide, encourage or assist them.
But Direct Resource is not simply about “having people help you.”
It also represents:
knowledge, learning, culture, education, wisdom, moral values and the inner spiritual world.
People with a strong Direct Resource influence often value intellectual and spiritual fulfillment.
They may be less comfortable in crude or overly aggressive environments and may have a natural appreciation for knowledge, culture, philosophy, religion, art and deeper thinking.
In terms of personality, they often tend to be:
kind, gentle, compassionate, well-mannered, thoughtful, emotionally sensitive, principled, caring and willing to help others.
From a career perspective, such qualities may also make them naturally suited to areas such as:
education, research, academia, philosophy, culture, the arts and other fields that require knowledge, reflection and intellectual depth.
So, from its positive perspective, Direct Resource is actually a very blessed and nurturing star.
It represents not only the mother, but also the love, knowledge, protection, guidance and spiritual nourishment that a person receives throughout life.
⸻
The Other Side of Direct Resource — Finding the Balance Between Protection and Growth
Of course, every Ten God has two sides.
Direct Resource is fundamentally nurturing and supportive, but anything in excess may create another tendency.
Direct Resource represents protection, care and support.
If a person receives too much protection throughout life, they may have fewer opportunities to experience difficulties and challenges independently.
As a result, someone with very strong Direct Resource may sometimes be more inclined to trust others, believe in the goodness of the world, and place a high value on security.
Put positively, this can be seen as innocence, kindness and a belief in the goodness of people.
Only when the protective influence becomes excessive might it manifest as greater dependence, overthinking or hesitation before taking action.
Therefore, the ideal expression of Direct Resource is not to keep a person protected forever.
It is to:
nourish first, then allow them to grow; give them strength first, then allow them to walk their own path.
This is one of the things I find so fascinating about BaZi.
The same Resource star can represent:
mother, teacher, benefactor, knowledge, protection, wisdom and blessings.
Only when it becomes excessive can it potentially turn into dependency.
That is why we should never simply label a Ten God as “good” or “bad.”
We need to look at its position, strength, combinations and overall balance within the entire BaZi chart.
⸻
How Do We Know Whether Direct Resource Is Prominent in a BaZi Chart?
Generally, we first examine the Month Branch and seasonal influence, then look at the position, quantity, visibility and strength of Direct Resource throughout the entire chart.
If Direct Resource is prominent and is also revealed on the Heavenly Stems, while having roots in the Earthly Branches, its characteristics may become more apparent.
However, determining whether someone truly belongs to a so-called “Direct Resource Structure” (正印格) cannot simply be based on having two Direct Resource stars.
We also need to consider:
the Month Branch, strength and weakness of the chart, whether the stars are revealed or hidden, their roots, combinations, and the overall generating and controlling relationships among the Five Elements.
This is why genuine BaZi study cannot simply be about counting the Ten Gods.
Seeing the Ten Gods is only the beginning. Understanding the relationships between them is where the deeper study of BaZi begins.
And this same principle applies when analyzing all the other Ten Gods.
⸻
The Day Pillar — Understanding “Me” and My Partner
The Day Pillar is particularly important in BaZi.
The Day Master represents “Me,” while the Day Branch is the position closest to the Day Master and is traditionally used to observe the Spouse Palace.
In simple terms:
Day Master = Me
Day Branch = Spouse Palace
Traditionally, for a male chart, the Wealth stars are used to represent the wife, while for a female chart, the Officer stars are used to represent the husband.
For example, in a male chart, Direct Wealth is traditionally associated with the principal wife.
If Direct Wealth sits in the Day Branch, this combination can be examined when looking at the person’s relationship and interaction with his spouse.
If Rob Wealth occupies the Day Branch, it may suggest that competition, differences of opinion or financial issues could become themes within the relationship.
But again, we should never make a conclusion based on one position alone.
The entire BaZi chart must be considered.
This is what makes BaZi so fascinating.
Through the Ten Gods, we can observe the patterns of interaction between a person and their:
parents, siblings, spouse, children, friends, colleagues, superiors and society.
⸻
What Do the Four Pillars Represent?
From the traditional Four Pillars framework, we can broadly understand them as follows:
Year Pillar: ancestors, family background and early environment
Month Pillar: parents, elders, upbringing and, in many systems, career and social environment
Day Pillar: oneself and marital relationship
Hour Pillar: children, younger generations, subordinates and later life
Of course, different schools and systems may interpret these positions somewhat differently.
For example, some systems place greater emphasis on the Month Pillar when examining siblings, while using the Year Pillar as a reference for parents.
Different approaches can also be found in Qi Men Dun Jia and among modern practitioners.
Therefore, I believe the most important thing in learning BaZi is not to memorize one fixed answer.
It is to understand:
Why is this symbol interpreted this way? And can this interpretation be verified in actual charts?
When a theory can repeatedly stand up to practical observation, it becomes genuine knowledge.
⸻
The Ten Gods Are Really a Map of Human Relationships
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Ten Gods is that they express human relationships through the generating and controlling relationships of the Five Elements.
In simple terms:
What generates me = Resource
What I generate = Output
What I control = Wealth
What controls me = Officer/Killing
What is the same element as me = Companion
The Ten Gods therefore do not exist independently.
They generate, support, control and influence one another, creating the many different relationships we experience throughout life.
For example:
Wealth controls Resource.
In traditional Ten Gods symbolism, the Wealth star in a male chart can represent the wife, while Resource can represent the mother.
Therefore, the controlling relationship between Wealth and Resource has traditionally been used as one symbolic way of understanding the potential differences in position and perspective between a wife and a mother.
This is one of the fascinating aspects of the Ten Gods.
Many complicated human relationships can actually be symbolically expressed through the generating and controlling relationships of the Five Elements.
Direct Resource is also traditionally associated with a person’s conscience, principles, knowledge and inner cultivation.
Therefore, when Wealth becomes excessively strong and strongly controls Resource, traditional symbolism may sometimes interpret this as a situation where a person becomes overly focused on material interests and neglects inner principles or conscience.
But again, we should never judge a person’s character simply from one relationship such as “Wealth controlling Resource.”
It must always be interpreted within the context of the entire BaZi chart.
⸻
Learning BaZi Is Ultimately About Understanding “Me” and the World
This is also why I have become increasingly fascinated by the Ten Gods.
When we are young, we may study BaZi mainly by asking:
Do I have Wealth? Do I have Authority? Do I have Benefactors? Will I have a good marriage? Will I succeed in my career?
But as we gain age and experience, I increasingly feel that:
The real value of the Ten Gods is that they allow us to understand how we interact with the world.
Resource asks:
Who supports, teaches and nurtures me?
Companions describe our relationships with people of a similar position, such as friends and peers.
Output describes how we express ourselves and create value.
Wealth describes how we deal with reality, resources and responsibilities.
Officer and Killing represent rules, responsibility, pressure and social expectations.
When these Ten Gods generate and control one another, they create patterns that influence our personality and our interactions with family, relationships, work and society.
So the true beauty of BaZi is not simply about predicting good fortune or misfortune.
Once you begin to understand the relationships among the Ten Gods, you may gradually discover something remarkable:
Many of the relationships we experience in life can already be expressed through the generating and controlling principles of the Five Elements.
That is where I will leave it for today.
When I have the time, I will continue with the other Ten Gods — Friend, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Resource and Indirect Resource — and explore what each represents, the personalities associated with them, and how they support and control one another.
To study BaZi is, in many ways, to begin with “Me” and gradually understand my relationship with my parents, partner, children, friends, society and the world around me.
And when you truly understand the Ten Gods, you are no longer simply looking at a BaZi chart.
You are looking at a map of human relationships and the journey of life.
